Just like in business, the journey is often unpredictable, but perseverance and strategy are what lead to growth.

As I laid out my gear on the bed the night before the Everest Base Camp climb, I thought I had everything perfectly planned. I had rented most of the equipment locally, avoiding the hassle of bringing heavy luggage from my safari in Africa the month before.

But the truth is, no amount of preparation can fully ready you for the challenges ahead—whether it’s a mountain or a business. You’ll never have everything perfectly aligned, and as I would soon learn, you’re always going to be in the wrong gear.

This moment, looking at my gear, reminded me of the early stages of any business. No matter how much you plan or prepare, unexpected challenges will always arise. You won’t have all the right tools or answers. The key is learning to adapt and push forward with what you have, just like I did on the climb.

The Journey: Trust, Adaptability, and Perseverance

As we began the trek, I quickly realized that no plan is ever foolproof. The altitude hit us harder than expected, and we constantly had to stop and adjust our gear.

I remember telling myself, Just keep moving. In business, just like on the mountain, progress is never a straight line. You hit bumps, you face setbacks, and sometimes, you feel like giving up. But it’s in these moments that you find your strength.

I learned to trust not only my own abilities but also the guidance of those around me—our Sherpa leaders, the team, and even my brother, who was pushing through his own struggles. In business, this trust translates into the team you build, the partnerships you form, and the mentors who guide you.

You have to trust the process and the people around you to succeed.

The Breaking Point: When Doubt Creeps In

There were moments along the journey to Base Camp when doubt set in hard. I was battling exhaustion, my body felt like it was breaking down, and the path ahead seemed endless.

At one point, I reached for a Snickers bar—probably the most calorie-dense, unhealthy snack you can find, but it packs a punch. In that moment, it was exactly what I needed—a jolt of energy to keep going. The sugar hit, and I was ready to push through, step by step.

In business, doubt is inevitable. You’ll hit points where you question your decisions, where the obstacles seem too big to overcome. But, like the climb, the secret is to keep going. Focus on what you can control, take small steps, and trust that progress is being made even if you can’t see the summit yet.

The Value of Recalibration: Adjusting as You Go

Halfway through the climb, I realized that the gear I thought was sufficient wasn’t holding up. I had to recalibrate—adding more layers, changing my pace, and adjusting my mindset.

The tea houses became places of refuge where I could reflect, eat some much-needed food (mostly noodles), and rethink my strategy. I had to embrace the discomfort of constantly adjusting, knowing that flexibility was key to survival.

This is the same in business. Plans need to be flexible, adaptable, and open to change. Recalibrating along the way isn’t a sign of failure—it’s a sign of growth. The best leaders and businesses know when to shift gears, change direction, or pivot when the current path isn’t working.

Growth Isn’t a Straight Line

The journey to Everest Base Camp wasn’t a straight line. It was full of moments where I wanted to give up, where I felt unprepared, and where I had to adjust my expectations.

But that’s the essence of growth—both in life and business. It’s messy, unpredictable, and requires constant recalibration. Success isn’t about having the perfect plan; it’s about how you adapt and move forward when the plan falls apart.

The climb to Base Camp showed me that growth is a process, not a destination. Just like in business, the key is perseverance, adaptability, and the willingness to keep moving, even when the path ahead is unclear.
